Words

For the past several months I’ve been studying words. At first that may seem like a strange gospel topic to study, but it has been fascinating. Let me share with you just a few scriptures that prompted this study.

Mosiah 4:30: “But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not.

Alma 12:14: “For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence.”

1 Nephi 17:31: “And it came to pass that according to his word he did destroy them; and according to his word he did lead them; and according to his word he did do all things for them; and there was not any thing done save it were by his word.”

John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Several questions prompted my study. One was whether the Word as used by John (which refers to Jesus Christ), and the word used in the other verses have anything to do with each other.

I’ll let you ponder that as I have done and tomorrow I’ll tell you an incident that happened that sent me on the search to understand the power of words.

  1. At the BYU Women's Conference, I attended a class taught by Susan Easton Black. She said when she was a girl, her dad reprimanded her when she was caught gossiping about a friend with this statement, "Small people talk about other people, medium size people talk about events, but big people talk about ideas." So she tried to live her life thinking and exploring ideas and become a "big" person. I think she succeeded, and I think you did, too. :)

Can't wait to read what prompted this post....
