Our Merciful God

In the Lectures on Faith we are taught that if we don’t understand God’s true attributes it is impossible to have faith in Him. This is also true of Living in Truth. If we don’t understand who God is, how He helps us, and how much He loves us, it is impossible to live in Truth. But when we understand these things, Living in Truth becomes much easier.

The Lectures explain that we need to understand that God is the powerful One who created the world. When you really believe that He has so much power that He can bring a world into being, you know he can help you with whatever problem you have. Nothing is too big for Him. The Lectures tell us we need to understand that God is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abundant in goodness” and that He has always been like that. This includes several facts that are important to know. God is unchangeable. He didn’t extend mercy to the Children of Israel and then decide He’s given out enough mercy. He will be just as merciful with you and me because He loves us just as He loved them. He is no respecter of persons and he cannot lie. He is a God of Truth.

When we really know and savor these attributes in our hearts we know that we will never be left alone and that no matter how difficult the road ahead appears, we have all the help we need to keep our feet firmly planted in Truth.

I was actually just reading in Moroni this morning. Chapter 8:18. It fits perfectly with your post, so thank you for the beautiful reminder.
